THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Shooting in Aurora, Colorado

Last night, a gunman killed 12 (confirmed) people at a Colorado opening of The Dark Knight Rises. He wore a gas mask and released an unknown gas into the crowd and opened fire upon them. Several people were killed and 50 were injured. Due to this, the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises scheduled for Friday in Paris has been canceled as well. The gunman is James Holmes, a student who dropped out of the University of Colorado Medical School last month! A total of 71 persons were shot by the suspect.

Let’s remember the following people in this tragedy…

  • John Blunk, 26
  • AJ Boik, 18

The following is a statement by director Christopher Nolan about the tragic events that happened in Aurora, Colorado.

Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community.

I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime.

The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me.

Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families.

President Obama has issued a proclamation that orders flags to fly at half-staff from now until sunset on Wednesday.

“As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on July 20, 2012, in Aurora, Colorado, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, July 25, 2012. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”
