FOX Gives Series Order to New Action-Adventure Drama HIEROGLYPH!

Hieroglyph - Fox - Travis Beacham - Header - SMHigh-Concept, Epic Series Features Ancient Egypt as Backdrop for Palace Intrigue, Quests for Power and World of Magic, Gods and Goddesses

20th Century Fox Television and Chernin Entertainment to Produce Series; Screenwriter Travis Beacham (“Pacific Rim”) to Write and Executive-Produce; Miguel Sapochnik (“Fringe”) to Direct Premiere Episode

Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX) has given a 13-episode series order to HIEROGLYPH, a fantastical action-adventure show produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Chernin Entertainment, and executive-produced by Peter Chernin (NEW GIRL, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Katherine Pope (NEW GIRL) and Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim, Clash of the Titans), who wrote the pilot script. Miguel Sapochnik (Repo Men, Fringe) will serve as an executive producer on the project and will direct the premiere episode. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2014.

Set in ancient Egypt, where fantasy and reality intertwined, HIEROGLYPH follows a notorious thief who is plucked from prison to serve the Pharoah, navigating palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and even a few divine sorcerers.

“We wanted to do a show about deceit, sex, intrigue in the court and fantastical goings-on – no better place to set that than ancient Egypt,” said Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment for FOX. “Travis Beacham has an inventive mind, and he has wrapped this all together in this intoxicating new drama.”

Based on his original story idea, Travis Beacham co-wrote the screenplay with director Guillermo Del Toro for this past summer’s sci-fi hit Pacific Rim, which has grossed more than $400 million worldwide since its release in July. Beacham also co-wrote the screenplay for the hit 2010 re-imagining of the classic mythic adventure Clash of the Titans, directed by Louis Leterrier. Beacham is currently writing the sequel to Pacific Rim for Legendary. He has penned screenplays for the feature films 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo and a remake of the sci-fi classic, The Black Hole.

Chernin Entertainment produces television programs and feature films. Its current television slate includes FOX’s NEW GIRL. The company’s first feature film, Rise of Planet of the Apes, was released in August 2011 and has grossed more than $480 million at the worldwide box office. Chernin Entertainment is currently producing the sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, as well as the sequel to its successful summer comedy, The Heat.

A 21st Century Fox company, Twentieth Century Fox Television is one of the industry’s most prolific suppliers of primetime television programming and entertainment content, including the blockbuster and Emmy Award- and Golden Globe Award-winning Modern Family, the pop culture phenomenon and Golden Globe Award-winning GLEE, the celebrated anthology series American Horror Story, the hit comedies NEW GIRL and How I Met Your Mother and the longest running primetime scripted series in the history of television, THE SIMPSONS. The studio recently resurrected its Emmy Award-winning cult hit Arrested Development, and its cable production division, Fox 21, is responsible for the Emmy Award- and Golden Globe Award-winning Homeland. The studio’s newest drama, SLEEPY HOLLOW, has garnered critical acclaim, high ratings and was the first freshman show of the season to earn a renewal.

HIEROGLYPH is produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Chernin Entertainment. The series is created, written and executive-produced by Travis Beacham. Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope, as well as Miguel Sapochnik, who will direct the premiere episode, also serve as executive producers.

Tuesday Night (8:00-11:00 pm)
With its Tuesday debuts, ABC was up by 45% in Adults 18-49 over the year-ago night (2.9/8 vs. 2.0/6) to deliver its strongest performance on the opening Tuesday of a season in 3 years – since 9/21/10.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (8:00-9:00 pm)
In the 8:00 p.m. hour, ABC’s series debut of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. opened a strong No. 1 in the time period with Adults 18-49 (4.6/14), defeating NBC’s Tuesday premiere of The Voice by 15% (4.0/12) and CBS’ season premiere of NCIS by 35% (3.4/10), to qualify as TV’s highest rated drama debut in nearly 4 years – since 11/3/09. It was also Tuesday’s No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49 (tie) and across all key Men demographics (M18-34/M18-49/M25-54). And despite the strong competition, the self-starting ABC drama gained young adults from its first half-hour to its second half-hour.

The Goldbergs (9:00-9:30 pm)
The season’s No. 1 new comedy in Adults 18-49 and the top-rated comedy of the night, ABC’s series premiere of The Goldbergs (3.2/9) at 9:00 p.m. beat Fox’s New Girl by 52% (2.1/6) and topped last fall’s premiere of Happy Endings in the half-hour hour by 78% (1.8/5 on 10/23/12). It ranked as TV’s top-rated comedy debut in over 1 year and ABC’s highest-rated in 2 years – since 9/11/12 and 10/11/11, respectively. Trophy Wife (9:30-10:00 pm)
At 9:30 p.m. among Adults 18-49, the debut of ABC’s Trophy Wife (2.3/6) defeated Fox’s The Mindy Project by 53% (1.5/5) and outdelivered the year-ago fall premiere of Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt 23 by 35% (1.7/4 on 10/23/12).

Lucky 7 (10:00-11:00 pm)

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 48% currently, from 45% at the same point in 2012. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Starz Officially Greenlights New Original Series OUTLANDER from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore

Outlander - A Starz Original Series - Diana Gabaldon - Sony Pictures Television - Ronald D. Moore - HeaderThe network has ordered 16 episodes of the series which will begin filming in Scotland this fall.

Network Will Team up with Sony Pictures TV

Series Based on Diana Gabaldon’s International Best-Selling Novels

Starz Chief Executive Officer, Chris Albrecht, announced today that Starz will partner with Sony Pictures Television to greenlight Outlander, an original series adapted from Diana Gabaldon‘s international bestselling books. The network has ordered 16 episodes of the series which will begin filming in Scotland this fall. It is slated to premiere in 2014.

The series adaptation for Outlander will be written by Ronald D. Moore (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: The Next Generation). Moore is best known for his work on Battlestar Galactica, which won him a Peabody Award in 2006. Ronald D. Moore and Jim Kohlberg are executive producers of Outlander, which is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining and Supply Company and Left Bank Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

“We are thrilled to be bringing Outlander to Starz next year,” said Chris Albrecht, CEO of Starz. “Diana has created an incredibly compelling heroine, thrust into a very complex world, not to mention, time. The books weave a fascinating tapestry of history, spirituality, love and honor, not to mention plenty of time travel, sex and warfare. With Diana’s stories guiding us and Ron’s mastery, we hope to bring Claire and Jamie to life for the millions of fans the world over.”

Moore added, “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to bring these books to life. Diana’s created a rich and textured world filled with intriguing characters, and I believe that Starz is the perfect home for her story. I think we’ll make something that the millions of fans of these books will enjoy and recognize as Outlander.”

Diana Gabaldon’s seven-book series has sold more than 20 million copies and has graced the New York Times best-sellers list six times. The eighth installment of the Outlander series is slated to be released in the fall of 2013.

The Outlander series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure in one grandiose tale. It follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Starz will retain all domestic multiplatform pay TV rights to the original series.
