Walter Simonson’s The Mighty Thor: Artist’s Edition To Launch at San Diego Comic-Con

Walter Simonson, legendary comics writer and artist of an overwhelmingly impressive catalog of books, will appear at the IDW booth every day during the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, signing copies of WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION. In addition to the regular edition available in July at comic stores, IDW will offer a limited Comic-Con exclusive edition featuring a variant cover, only available through IDW at the convention. Readers can now pre-order both editions direct from IDW Publishing for pick up at Comic-Con. The regular edition is also available for mail delivery, and orders will be filled after San Diego Comic-Con. The Comic-Con exclusive edition will only be available at the convention.

“I wrote and drew The Mighty Thor for Marvel more 25 years ago now, at a time when it was the fate of old comics to be deployed to the back issue bins in comic shops and at conventions.  No one had any expectations of reprints or trade collections.  Now, it’s a new day,” said Simonson. “I’m pleased that IDW and Marvel have seen fit to go back and revisit this work as they have. I couldn’t be more delighted to know Thor, Beta Ray Bill, and all their friends turned out to have a much longer shelf-life than I would ever have imagined.”

An oversized, hardcover collection, WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION will present Thor 337-340Simonson’s first classic story arc, which introduced Beta Ray Bill, and Thor 360-362Simonson’s choice for the second arc in the book. All the pages in the ARTIST’S EDITION have been scanned from Simonson’s personal original art to ensure the highest possible quality reproduction. While appearing to be in black and white, each page was scanned in color to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for instance, white-out corrections and blue pencil notations.

“Walter’s run on The Mighty Thor is one of the best ever in comics—period,” said editor Scott Dunbier, “and to be able to see it now as an Artist’s Edition, printed the same size as drawn, and scanned from all the originals… well, I just can’t wait to get my paws on it!”

This will be Simonson’s first visit to San Diego Comic-Con since 2004. Joining Simonsonwill be his wife, Louise “Weezie” Simonson, a noted comic book editor and writer.WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION will be the first in a series of Artist’s Editions featuring legendary creators and comics from Marvel.

Marvel’s Invisible Woman SDCC 2011 Exclusive Bishoujo Statue by Kotobukiya

Kotobukiya has also released information about their Invisible Woman Bishoujo Statue to be premiered at Comic-Con! It will be limited to 500 pieces total and is a San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive! This amazing statue will definitely be another item that will sell out.

A KOTOBUKIYA Japanese import! Kotobukiya is proud to present its convention exclusive for San Diego Comic-Con 2011, a new variant edition of the hit Marvel Comics Fantastic Four Bishoujo Statue: INVISIBLE WOMAN SDCC 2011 EXCLUSIVE! In the first issue of Fantastic Four in 1961 Sue Storm was a member of Reed Richards’ doomed spaceflight that encountered cosmic radiation, imbuing the four humans on-board with strange abilities. With powers of invisibility and force field creation, Sue became the Invisible Woman (though at first she was the Invisible “Girl”) and a core member of the Fantastic Four! The first version of the character in the amazing Marvel Bishoujo collection (combining iconic super-heroines and villains with traditional Japanese stylings) captured the character in her modern outfit with special translucent effects. Now Sue Storm is back again featuring her classic 1980s costume and some great special features, all based on an original character reinterpretation by illustrator Shunya Yamashita!

She may have the power to disappear from view, but the Invisible Woman is on full display here! The sultry Sue stands on her defeated opponent, shedding her protective force field and showing off with a jaunty pose. Casually walking toward you with one hand on her hip, the fantastic heroine points towards the sky with an all new hand gesture and shorter hair. The Invisible Woman is dressed in her traditional Fantastic Four costume, an ultra skintight bodysuit showing off all of her sexy curves in metallic blue and white with the team’s logo on her chest. This new costume looks incredible on her with a bright shimmer and excellent details down to the open fingers on her gloves. While she’s fully visible this time around, the force field shards around her are a nice nearly-translucent pale blue. The Invisible Woman’s strong pose and alluring figure are perfectly topped off by a beautiful Bishoujo-styled face that shows off her confidence and power after a tremendous battle!

Invisible Woman stands just over 9 inches tall (in the current Marvel Bishoujo 1/7th scale) on an amazing georama base depicting the hand of the gigantic green monster from the cover of Fantastic Four #1, “The Mole Man’s Monster!” This exclusive version is limited to just 500 pieces and will be available exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 and via limited pre-orders on http://www.kotous.com!

Available July 2011.

Dave Stevens: Complete Sketches & Studies Retail Edition and SDCC Edition

IDW Publishing is releasing TWO versions of this book. The first one is available for pick-up at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 or by mail if you do not select the option for SDCC pick-up (but it won’t ship until after AUGUST 1, 2011).

Dave Stevens, famed creator of The Rocketeer, was an extraordinary artist. His talents with pencil and brush were legendary and fans anxiously awaited each new—although infrequent—cover or illustration he rendered. To quell his fans thirst for more Stevens art, Dave self-published four limited edition sketchbooks, chock full of beautiful preliminaries, sketches, roughs, and even completely finished pieces. All four sketchbooks are long out of print, and are highly sought-after collectibles, but IDW is now collecting all four, as well as numerous drawings never before seen, in one gorgeous hardcover. Brought to you by the same team responsible for the Eisner Award-winning The Rocketeer: The Complete Adventures Deluxe Edition.

The other version is the limited edition version from IDW that is ONLY available at San Diego Comic-Con! It is limited to 300 copies and may be pre-ordered BUT you MUST pick up the book at IDW’s booth at Comic-Con. I guarantee this will sell out pretty quickly.
