Star Trek Celebration to feature EPIX Original Docs William Shatner’s GET A LIFE! and THE CAPTAINS plus 11 Star Trek Movies

EPIX, the premium entertainment network, today announced a free preview of the EPIX app on Xbox 360(R) along with a special programming event, Shatnerific: A Celebration of Star Trek Fandom, bringing together EPIX Original Documentaries about the franchise with 11 popular Star Trek movies to be made available July 28 – 29. A featured event on the Xbox LIVE dashboard, the Star Trek Celebration will make premium programming normally available only to Xbox LIVE Gold customers accessible to all Xbox LIVE subscribers.

Following up the success of the EPIX Original Documentary The Captains, an in-depth look at the Star Trek franchise through the experiences of each actor who has played a Starfleet captain, Shatner returns with William Shatner’s Get a Life! which explores the flip side of the coin in the Star Trek phenomena: the fans.

Along with the EPIX Original Documentaries, the Celebration of Star Trek Fandom will also feature an Xbox 360(R) exclusive presentation of all 11 Star Trek films, from the original Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) to the most recent Star Trek (2009).

“Xbox is a great partner for EPIX and we are thrilled to offer this unique experience to the massive fan base that the Star Trek franchise enjoys. Through this partnership we are able to reach an expanded audience that is using Xbox 360 and engage fans with our content to drive even greater awareness of our multiplatform offering,” said Mark Greenberg, EPIX CEO and President.

About the EPIX Original Documentary
William Shatner’s Get a Life! – Premiering July 28 at 8pm EST Based on Shatner’s hugely popular book (in response to his now infamous skit on SNL), this film examines the mystery, longevity and the cultural phenomena of Star Trek and its long-obsessed fans known as “Trekkers.” On the surface, the film is an exploration of strangers who have for years attended conventions which looked foolish and almost laughable to some – but Shatner discovers the many secrets and hidden motives behind these individuals’ compulsion to attend these events. The end result is a film that reveals a fun and touching side of the fanfare surrounding Star Trek, and examines the thrill of what’s happening at these fantasy conventions and the enduring popularity of the film and TV series as Shatner further embraces his role as Captain James T. Kirk and his own impact.

About the EPIX Original Documentary

The Captains
An EPIX original documentary produced and directed by William Shatner, The Captains follows the iconic star as he travels the world to connect with each of the actors who have played captains over the long life of the Star Trek franchise including Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula, Avery Brooks, and Chris Pine.

San Diego’s Birch North Park Theatre Hosts TREK NATION for Exclusive Comic-Con Kickoff Event

Roddenberry Entertainment, the successor of the science fiction pioneer that brought television and film audiences Star Trek, announced today that it will be bringing its Saturn Award- nominated film, Trek Nation, to San Diego’s Birch North Park Theatre on July 12 at 7 p.m. This is an opportunity for an exclusive group of sci-fi fans to experience the first showing of the film in this type of environment. Kicking off Comic-Con weekend, the 90-minute film will be followed by an intimate question and answer session with Trek Nation Executive Producer Rod Roddenberry.

There is no cost for the event, but only a limited number of tickets are available to those who RSVP through the Trek Nation website, www.treknationmovie.com, beginning May 1 at 9 a.m. PST. Confirmation of each RSVP will guarantee entrance into the theater for the movie showing and Q & A session. Klingons, Borgs and Vulcans are all welcome as, in true Star Trek fashion, fans are encouraged to don their favorite costume or Federation-inspired outfit to express their allegiance during the event.

Through exclusive footage and interviews with devoted fans, including George Lucas, J.J. Abrams, Seth MacFarlane and many notable Star Trek alumni, Trek Nation chronicles a son’s journey to discover his father and the creation that helped define modern-day science fiction.

“By exploring my father through a variety of untapped touchstones, we are able to introduce the world to a Gene Roddenberry it’s never met before. Through this process of humanization, Trek Nation reminds us that none of us are perfect but that within our imperfections lays the potential for greatness,” said Executive Producer Rod Roddenberry.

Since its debut, Rod Roddenberry’s tribute to his father, Gene Roddenberry, has been met with rave reviews, including a nomination from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for a 2012 Saturn Award.

“The Roddenberry and Star Trek names have an almost unparalleled level of cultural significance,” noted Birch North Park Theatre Executive Director Joe Altbaum. “And with our theater’s history, it’s fitting that we’re tasked with creating the level of experience that’s expected by Roddenberry’s passionate fans by bringing the film to the big screen. We’re honored.”

While Trek Nation won’t be officially released on DVD until the fall, it will be available for advance purchase exclusively at the Roddenberry ComicCon booth and on-site at the Birch North Park Theatre at the July 12th event. Rod Roddenberry will be available to sign purchased DVDs after the Q&A session during a meet-and-greet at West Coast Tavern.

SCIENCE Explores the Legacy of the Star Trek Phenomenon With the Definitive Two-Hour Television Event: TREK NATION

SCIENCE celebrates the 45th anniversary of one of the greatest television franchises of all time, Star Trek, with the world-premiere two-hour event, TREK NATION. This tribute follows Gene Roddenberry’s son, Rod, as he explores the deep impact of his father’s singular vision for the future. Through interviews with fans, including George Lucas, J.J. Abrams, Seth MacFarlane, and many notable Star Trek alums, TREK NATION chronicles a son’s journey to discover his father’s work that helped define science fiction. TREK NATION premieres on SCIENCE on Wednesday, November 30 at 8PM ET/PT.

TREK NATION draws on hours of exclusive footage, including never-before-seen home movies from the Roddenberry family collection and the first-ever Star Trek convention. This film demonstrates that Roddenberry’s work has not only inspired legions of fans across the globe, but generated a cultural movement. Star Trek is a phenomenon that goes beyond entertainment; it has influenced politics, space travel, social morality and much more. Star Trek was a catalyst which has fostered an enhanced understanding of the human condition, capturing man’s constant search for a better world.

Gene Roddenberry is the original thought-provocateur; the rebel-genius who was not afraid to push the boundaries of what science can accomplish,” said Debbie Myers, general manager and executive vice president of SCIENCE. “Star Trek used science fiction to hold a mirror to society, leveraging its storylines as a platform for social commentary touching on topics such as racism, sexism, the economy, war, peace and religion. Working with Rod, and showing footage never shared on television is what makes TREK NATION truly inspiring.”

“I am so glad TREK NATION found its home at SCIENCE,” says Rod Roddenberry, Executive producer of Trek Nation and son of Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry. “They understood that, as personal as the film was for me, TREK NATION is really a universal story of a son coming to understand his father. The experience allowed me to learn more about the man behind this incredible science fiction phenomenon as well as the man I knew as ‘Dad.’ I think it’s something that Star Trek fans and those less familiar with the franchise will enjoy.”

Star Trek was a revolution that would define an era. When it first premiered on NBC in 1966, it often was described as a western set in space. However, the series provided a much deeper commentary that created a devoted and loyal fan base which continues to grow, even today. With a then-virtually-unknown cast, each week Roddenberry told tales of humans and aliens who lived side by side and served the Starfleet, the peacekeeping armada of the universe.

TREK NATION is produced for SCIENCE by Roddenberry Entertainment and New Animal Productions. For Roddenberry Entertainment, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth are executive producers. Executive producer Nicole Rittenmeyer represents New Animal. Bernadette McDaid is the executive producer and vice president of production for SCIENCE. Lindsay Foster is associate producer for SCIENCE and Debbie Adler Myers is general manager and executive vice president of SCIENCE.
