Hannah Means-Shannon (Georgian Court University), Robert Weiner (Texas Tech University), and Christina Angel (Metropolitan State University of Denver) examine the teaching of comic books in the classroom and the variety of opportunities for publishing in comics studies, including journals, forums, blogs, and social media. The group contemplates the future of comic studies for educators, librarians, and scholars of many kinds.

Influenced in part from their Latino heritage as well as other significant sources, this group of independent artists share their perspectives on making comics in a multicultural society. Warner Archives Collection Presents Pulp Heroes of Film and TV: Tarzan, Doc Savage, Bomba, and More
Many timeless, larger-than-life heroes can be traced to the brittle pages of pulp magazines. Some swung from jungle vines, others created lonely fortresses in the polar ice, and still others performed unmatched feats of physical prowess and mental agility. Many of these heroes have leaped from the page to screens both large and small to invade our dreams and inspire our lives. Join Ron Ely (Tarzan, Doc Savage: Man of Bronze) the Warner Archive Collection team along with special guests to learn about the stories behind the stories of rare pulp-inspired television and film releases, including Tarzan, Doc Savage, Bomba, and more.

Comics Arts Conference Session #2: Comics & Journalism
Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight) explores the history of journalist characters in comic book stories and why so many news folk date, harangue, or are themselves superheroes. Dr. Sarah Boslaugh (Kennesaw State University) describes a history of comics journalism in the real world and offers a prediction for its future. Joining them are comics journalists Alan Kistler (Comic Book Resources), Tony B. Kim (Babble On 5), Molly Mahan (Geekscape.net), and Michael Worthan (Comic Book Therapy) to set these professors straight on the reality of it all.

Despite the comics industry’s ever-changing media, two constants remain: telling a good story and doing so in a fresh way. The Antidote Trust, America’s #1 indie collective, is on hand to share creative, production, and marketing tips. This year’s panelists are Geoff Thorne (writer, Leverage, Ben 10, and DHP’s Journeymen), published novelist Melissa Jarvis (Book Strand), BuyIndieComics.com and DWAP Productions creator Dale Wilson, Casey Kehoe (Crack Dog comics creator and short film director), Dani Dixon (entrepreneur/creator of Tumble Creek Press), and comics creator and winner of the inaugural “Glyph” Rising Star Award Robert Roach.

The 14th Annual Animation Show of Shows
Ron Diamond (Program curator, President of Acme Filmworks and AWN.com) presents the best and newest in international animation. Included is Disney’s Oscar winning Paperman along with 10 animated shorts culled from the most notable festivals from around the world. It’s another duel-to-the-drawing-boards competition as three of the fastest, funniest cartoonists working today vie for the nonexistent crown. They are Scott Shaw! The Disney/ABC’s of TV Writing: Through the Looking Glass of the TV Writers Room
What actually happens in the TV writers room is shrouded in secrecy, but Disney/ABC’s Writing Program will demystify what goes on behind the doors of your favorite TV shows. The program’s Frank Bennett Gonzalez and Ollie Ashtari-Larki will share exclusive details on how they groom writers to be part of that world. Declassifying what goes on in the writers room are alumni Jane Espenson (ABC’s Once Upon a Time, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Samantha Humphrey (ABC’s Body of Proof), and Silvia Cardenas Olivas (Disney Channel’s Jesse) and current program participants Severiano Canales (Private Practice) and Kristine Huntley (Legend of the Seeker). Comics Arts Conference Session #3: Truth, Reality, and Empathy in Comics
Can comic books and graphic novels help us understand the world in richer and more complete ways? Sarah Boslaugh (Kennesaw State University) discusses the roots and development of comics journalism, focusing on how this graphic medium complements both reporting and the growth of Internet journalism. Nicole Rehnberg (California State University, Fullerton) focuses on how the graphic memoirs Persepolis and Maus provide new viewpoints for understanding conflict in the Middle East and the horror of the Holocaust. Molly Hall (University of New Hampshire) shows how graphic novels can be serious literature and points out the potential benefits of using them in a humane literary studies curriculum.

I Can’t Write, I Can’t Draw, But I Love Comics!
SDCC’s annual jobs panel returns to WonderCon Anaheim. Just because you missed out on the writing and drawing genes doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for you in the comics, animation, and gaming industries. Panelists include animation/motion capture supervisor Derron Ross (Blur Studio), Nerdist Industries co-founder Peter Levin, voice-over actor Phil LaMarr (Futurama), and previs wiz Chris Edwards (The Third Floor). They’ll discuss their gigs and ways into the biz you many not have even considered. Moderated by Susan Karlin (Fast Company).

For the fourth straight year, Warner Bros. Television kicks off WonderCon with preview screenings of fan-favorite series. For 2013, WBTV will unveil the world premiere of new, previously unaired episodes of the first-year hit dramas Revolution, from creator Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and J. J. Abrams’s Bad Robot Productions (Fringe, Lost); Arrow, from executive producers Greg Berlanti (Golden Boy), Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern), and Andrew Kreisberg (Fringe); and The Following, from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) and executive producer Marcos Siega (The Vampire Diaries); in addition to the never-before-seen series premiere episode of Warner Bros. • Revolution — In this epic adventure from J. J. Abrams’s Bad Robot Productions and Supernatural‘s Eric Kripke, a family struggles in an American landscape where every piece of technology-computers, planes, cars, phones, even lights-has mysteriously blacked out forever. • Arrow — The CW’s most-watched series premiere since The Vampire Diaries in 2009, Arrow stars Stephen Amell as billionaire Oliver Queen, who, after being marooned for five years on a remote island, returns home with a mysterious agenda and lethal set of new skills that he uses in a war on crime. Reinventing the DC Comics character for a modern-day audience, the Arrow is not a superhero…but a hero, every bit as dangerous as the criminals he’s hunting. This hard-hitting action series also stars Katie Cassidy, Colin Donnell, David Ramsey, and Willa Holland, with Susanna Thompson and Paul Blackthorne. • The Following — Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Kevin Bacon stars in this terrifying new psychological thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (Scream) and executive producer Marcos Siega (The Vampire Diaries). In The Following, Bacon plays psychologically scarred ex-FBI agent Ryan Hardy, who’s drawn back into an ever-growing web of murder and madness masterminded by serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy, Rome), who brought an end to Hardy’s career years before. In addition to Bacon and Purefoy, The Following also stars Natalie Zea, Annie Parisse, Shawn Ashmore, Valorie Curry, Adan Canto, Nico Tortorella, and Kyle Catlett. • Teen Titans Go! — The Teen Titans are returning to Cartoon Network with all-new comedic adventures, and this time they’re giving viewers a look at what life is really like as a teen super hero…once the cape comes off. Inspired by the original Teen Titans series from Warner Bros. Animation that ran for five seasons, the character-driven comedy focuses on the funny that happens in between saving the world and living together as teenagers without adult supervision. The comedic mayhem of the animated series is punctuated by pranks and the occasional need to fight crime, but it will also deal with the everyday issues of adolescence. With epic staring contests to decide who does the laundry, a series of quests and battles to construct the perfect sandwich or fighting crime in Jump City, one thing is for sure: These Titans will always be ready for an adventure — inside the house and out. Produced by Warner Bros. Comics journalist Rik Offenberger (First Comics News, Archie Comics) moderates this panel on just what it takes to get coverage, with the comic journalists themselves telling you what they are looking for in your submission. WonderCon Anaheim’s Comic Creator Connection is an event that puts writers and artists together to see whether they can find their creative counterparts. Here’s how it works: in two 2-hour sessions — on Friday and Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM — writers and artists can sit down and meet each other in a neutral environment. (Please note: Preliminary sign-ups for the CCC took place online before WonderCon Anaheim. Jayson cartoons have entertained generations of readers by taking a lighthearted look at gay life in the big city. Title character Jayson Callowhill doesn’t want much-just a job and a man worth having. That’s what he left Farmville and moved to Philadelphia to find. But like many of us, he’s still searching. On Christmas Day in 1982, Jeff Krell created Jayson, which has graced the pages of the Philadelphia Gay News, Gay Comix, Meatmen, and a series of graphic novels, including Jayson Goes to Hollywood (2008) and Jayson Gets a Job (2012). Jayson has even starred in an off-Broadway musical (1998) and in an upcoming animated short that will be previewed at WonderCon Anaheim. From a performance studies perspective, Maria Patrice Amon (University of California, Irvine) argues that cosplaying is the ultimate embodiment of Scott McCloud’s assertion of universal identification with characters through the simplification of the cartoon image. Rooted in contemporary comic and Foucauldian theory, Cameron McKee (University of California, Berkeley) argues that Tom of Finland’s comics were seminal to the emergence of a radical gay identity pre-Stonewall through the AIDS crisis. Christine Ferguson argues that Batman illustrates the superpower of S&M and, in the process of exploring the submissive side of Batman, demonstrates the importance of aftercare, bonding, and how not to call the Commissioner down.

Karma Waltonen (University of California, Davis) argues that the form and content of David Mazzucchelli’s masterwork Asterios Polyp are wedded in such a medium-specific way that it resists adaptation completely, and, through the relationship between form and content, it serves as a unique example of the medium. John Rodzvilla (Emerson College) discusses how Wallace Wood’s unpublished handout of “22 panels that always work” has influenced the pacing and layout of comics over the last 30 years in everything from superhero stories to independent graphic novels. Michael J. Muniz (Liberty University) presents a philosophical introspection on the fourth wall as a device to manifest narrative worlds that, when broken, becomes more transparent and even metaphysically malleable to the reader.

DC Entertainment Reveals Their WonderCon Anaheim 2013 Exclusives!

WonderCon Anaheim 2013 is only two weeks from now and DC Entertainment has revealed their exclusives for the show. So far there are three exclusives that will be available and they are the official WonderCon Anaheim T-Shirt, Batman #17 variant cover and Justice League of America #1 variant cover.

If you haven’t already heard, this year, the official WonderCon Anaheim convention T-shirt features an iconic image of Superman drawn by Jim Lee, DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and artist of this summer’s new series SUPERMAN UNCHAINED written by Scott Snyder. This art is also featured on the cover of the official convention Program Book. Here’s a first look at the t-shirt!

DCE’s WonderCon Anaheim exclusive variant covers envelop two of DC Comics’ most popular series! Priced at $10 each, the BATMAN #17 and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 variant covers are must-have collector’s items.

Illustrated by fan favorite artist Greg Capullo, the WonderCon Anaheim cover for BATMAN #17, written by Scott Snyder, takes the popular die-cut covers from “Death of the Family” and brings them back one last time for the epic final issue. The cover depicts The Joker’s face folded over Bruce Wayne’s, with purple background, to create a lasting impression while representing the ground breaking crossover which featured the Clown Prince of Crime’s triumphant return to DC COMICS—THE NEW 52.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1, the newly launched ongoing series written by Geoff Johns, arrives with a new variant to complete your collection of now over 52 covers for the issue. Aliens Took My Girl – The Motion Comic

Aliens Took My Girl premiered at WonderCon last month. The first issue was just released by Conduit Productions. This is the set-up:

When Oliver discovers that an alien artifact of intergalactic relevance was passed on to him by his late mother, he shows it to the one person he trusts, his former babysitter and newest crush Victoria. Not knowing that the carrier of the artifact might be in jeopardy he blindly gives the artifact to Victoria only to get abducted by the aliens who are looking for it. Now it is up to Oliver and his uncle Leon, to save the girl and potentially the universe along the way. Will they make it in time?

IDW Announces an All-New, Ongoing Comic Book Series — Womanthology

At WonderCon, IDW Publishing announced the launch of an all-new, ongoing Womanthology comic book series, inspired from Womanthology: Heroic, the hit anthology graphic novel created from an idea by artist Renae De Liz (The Last Unicorn) that went on to be one of Kickstarters most funded comics projects. The new ongoing series, Womanthology: Space! will debut with its first issue in September 2012.

“Womanthology: Heroic was such a big, wonderful experience, and not in my wildest dreams could I have hoped that it would go on to further adventures! I hope that Womanthology: Space! is just the start of a long line of amazing books that further open doors for women in comics everywhere. TwoMorrows Publishing Returns to WonderCon 2012

Legend of the Seeker is based on the Terry Goodkind fantasy book series, The Sword of Truth. After only two seasons, the show was unfortunately cancelled in April 2010. Fans quickly launched a “Save Our Seeker” campaign to renew the show, and continue to fight for the series. Hosting fan tables at all the cons is just one of the many ways the fans have contributed in spreading the word.
